As part of our Breaking Through the Headlines project, Malak questioned how toxic masculinity impacts young people within the Tower Hamlets community. Toxic masculinity is a type of discrimination that pressures those who identify as boys or men to behave in a traditional hyper-masculine way. This notion of masculinity idealises aggressive behaviour as well as homophobic and sexist values. Malak highlights the importance of challenging toxic masculinity in her documentary, emphasising the need to reform the individual mindset alongside the social norms that allow this discrimination to take place.

This project was produced as a collaboration between Spotlight and Headliners (UK) by Malak.
Thank you to the Tower Hamlets Prevent Team for making these sessions possible.
