During the summer, our NCS young people participated in an Enterprise Challenge supported by Sofia Offshore Wind Farm to create a campaign to improve the gender balance in the wind energy sector.

We had a wide range of ideas from the various groups of young people we worked with, but one of our groups came up with an amazing campaign that was entered into the regional finals. The team developed lesson plans for an education programme to encourage more girls to consider a career within the industry and questioned stereotypes surrounding career paths; rethinking what is ‘normal’ and bringing out the best in individuals.

Alongside the lesson plans the group created a ‘put a finger down’ TikTok campaign that discussed why women do or don’t go into certain careers due to barriers they may experience and highlighted the benefits of working at Sofia Offshore Wind Farm.

This fantastic campaign that aimed to tackle gender stereotypes was the winning entry at the North East Regional awards having been chosen from over 1000 other entries and you can view the award ceremony here.

The young people have now been invited to a consultation with Sofia Offshore Wind Farm to create a presentation around their ideas from the summer and talk to members of the Offshore Wind team.

Thank you to NCS and Sofia Offshore Wind Farm for supporting young people to have a voice.
