Building Bridges Forum for change

When incidents of rioting became unbearable, young people from interface areas in Belfast created a group which would tackle community safety issues head on.

Holding regular meetings, the group discuss how relationships can be improved between community and police in their areas, and also how negative incidents which have an effect on community safety can be reduced. An 'interface' is the name given to a place where segregated Protestant/Unionist/Loyalist and Catholic/Nationalist/Republican areas meet in Northern Ireland.

The forum has achieved great things since it's formation and it has had a direct impact on enhancing community safety in the area. It's participants have also relished the opportunity to have their say, lobbying for social change.

"As a young person,we feel like we are never listened to and we want our voices to be put out there." Luighseach, 17

To celebrate the success of the Building Bridges Forum the group have teamed up with Headliners to make this film which not only outlines what they do but also what challenging issues they hope to deal with in the future.

Building Bridges video
Very well done to all who participated in the programme. Sometimes it takes a lot of courage for young people in NI to be 'visible' especially when they are trying to 'build bridges' and 'make a difference' as they say. Be very proud that you are doing that; that your voices are there and are clear and strong and courageous. I know this is not easy and I know this interface is fraught with difficulties. Yet there you are doing more than some of the political leaders are doing!!!.......well done!
