Training the Teachers - Deaf Awareness in Schools

Young Deaf students face problems when interpreters don't turn up to classrooms. We investigate the possibility of including Deaf Awareness and British Sign Language in teaching courses.

I agree!
I found that a rather interesting video! I for one think that a basic understanding of BSL should be a must for all levels of teachers! whether that be primary through FE and HE!

Iv been working at a special needs school for the last two years and all my 1:1 case's have used a simplified version of BSL called Makaton, as their main form of communication.. And I do feel that a wide range of deaf students would benefit from a more mainstream orientated education.. But there just isn't the trained staff in mainstream schooling to meet the requirements..

Im hoping to move into Primary Teaching in the next couple of years and i for one will make sure i get at least BSL L1 trained (even if it has to be off my own back). As i think its a vital skill to have!
