Do It Safe

Is peer pressure the reason young people are having sex? Would you ask your mum for free contraception? Do young people learn about sex from porn? Six reporters from Headliners went to find out.

Do It Safe @ Pyro Radio

At the beginning of this year six young leaders from Thamesmead, Bexley came together to run a Sexual Health and Relationship project with £940 awarded by the Terrence Higgins Trust.

Keiran, 17, Ray, 16, Petra, 18, Juwon, 18, Alex, 17 and Rusimbi, 17 worked with Headliners, the Thamesmead Youth Awareness Project and Pyro Radio to produce this fascinating radio piece.

They wanted to understand why some young people aren’t protecting themselves and if they media has anything to do with it?

They also wanted to question Grime artist GHETTS about the responsibility artists have when it comes to young people and sexual health.

Part One – Is peer pressure the reason young people are having sex? Would you ask your mum for free contraception? Do young people learn about sex from porn?

Part Two – Do young people learn about Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s) from insults on the bus?

Part Three – Are adults bad role models for young people when it comes to relationships? Do your mates influence you when it comes to sex?

Part Four & Five - Is Ghetts’ song ‘Sing For Me’ about giving women orgasms? Plus listen as the Grime artist talks about artistic responsibility in making young people aware about safe sex and as Headliners reporter, Ray, schools Ghetts on STI’s.

With thanks to our partners: Thamesmead Youth Awareness Project, the Terrence Higgins Trust, Pyro Radio and Bexley Youth Service for their support.

The above radio piece was broadcast on Pyro Radio on 20th February 2009.
