If I was in charge of Lyrics

Andrew, 13, thinks some rap artists need to wash their mouths out...

Photo of AndrewIf I was in charge of music lyrics I would put a ban on swearing and sexual, homophobic or sexist language in rap and hip hop.

Rap artists like 50 Cent and Notorious B.I.G have far too much swearing in their lyrics. Neither of them has recorded any songs without using the F-word or other offensive language.

In a Notorious B.I.G song the opening lyrics say “Chest to the breast, sex is all I expect.” I think that that is absolutely revolting for women and should be fined by the music industry, and that the song which contains those lyrics should be taken off the album.

In 50 Cent’s song ‘In Da Club’, the thing that really annoys me is the chorus, which goes: “You can find me in da club, bottle full of bub, look mami I got the X if you into drugs. I’m into having sex, I ain’t into making love, so come give me a hug if you’re into being rubbed” Young people look up to 50 Cent and think he is really cool so when he raps about drugs, sex and guns they will be influenced by it in a negative way. And in that song he uses the F-word five times!

They do play edited versions of these songs on the radio, but when kids like me suddenly hear loads of gaps in a song we still know what they are saying. I like hip hop and rap but I prefer those artists who don’t use swear words in their music.
