Will Smith is a Legend in his own movie

Conrad Corr writes why he thinks Hollywood's latest zombie flick is a monster smash.

Still from I Am LegendWould you like to find yourself alone in a post-apocalyptic world where zombies want nothing more than to feast on your flesh? Well then I Am Legend would interest you.

Based on the novel by Richard Matheson, the film is directed by Francis Lawrence and features the Golden Globe-winner Will Smith.

The movie follow's Smith's character as he wanders a deserted New York after its population has been wiped out by a lethal virus.

Unfortunately for him he is not alone as many people changed into zombies as the bug mutated. Smith plays a virologist Robert Neville who takes it upon himself to find the cure.

The film as a whole was brilliant with a balanced fusion of CGI and great acting. The movie is unusual in the sense that most of the film Smith has no other actor to interact with other than a dog and a few mannequins.

This gives the movie an eerie atmosphere at times and there are shots of the Big Apple that look almost primeval. The production, which took place in New York in 2006, proved to be expensive with just one scene on the Brooklyn Bridge costing $5 million.

The only disappointing feature of the film is the lack of background into Smith’s character. He seems to be a scientist turned soldier without any true explanation as to why he under took the job of being the saviour of the earth.

Did he have any part to play in the creation of the killer virus and if so how? All we know is that Smith cannot be affected by the air borne virus.

I Am Legend is a great film, however, if you want to see Smith in a futuristic setting with a little less blood and gore I Robot is a decent alternative.
