Foyle marks World Aids Day

Hundreds of balloons are released from the city walls as young people remember those who are living with the terrible illness.

Headliners members in Derry marked World Aids Day with a balloon launch from the city's walls and report on the event with a short film.

People of all ages gathered outside the bureau to support and remember those who have been touched by the terrible illness.

It was especially important to show how relevant HIV and Aids are to people who live in Northern Ireland and to remember that all walks of life and countries are affected.

After the launch, members also watched a documentary about Aids, A Ribbon Is Red, which was produced by Foyle in 2006.

Terri McLaughlin, who was involved in the making of the film, said: “I enjoyed The Ribbon Is Red experience so much, especially meeting a local person who had lost a loved one to an Aids-related illnesses and hearing his story.”

For members of Headliners, marking World Aids Day meant giving thought to a very important issue on a local level and learning a lot more to improve our understanding of HIV and Aids.

It also provided a chance to do something special and released a positive image to the media - young people care too.
