On 16 December 2006 our Loud'n'Clear reporters went to Freightliners Farm in Islington. The whole idea of the trip was to find out about their environmental projects. The group made a film which was broadcast on Channel Five News and on Sky's website. It was made as part of Sky's Green Britain week.
The group were Jamie, Maryam, Bethany, Sophia and Ekuah-Rose (who didn't attend the trip but did a voice over for the film). Mary the farm manager was our tour guide on the farm.
We took in it turns to film using the digital camera and to take pictures with the stills cameras. We filmed the animals, which are all rare breeds from Britain, as well as their habitats and the ways they behave. We also filmed the buildings on the farm, which are themselves environmentally friendly.
One building, the straw bale hut, has straw bales in the walls for insulation and is being made into a classroom for school visits. Another building, the cordwood shed, is made out of logs and the walls in-between the logs are made out of lime render, which is also environmentally friendly. Finally there is the greenhouse - it is rounded so it can easily get sunlight from all directions. At the farm there is also a big community compost project which gets the people in the area involved in the environment.
Every year the farm sells Christmas trees to the public and collects them afterwards for recycling in their shredder. Outside the farm there is a small market which sells all sorts of things from toys to cakes!
I really enjoyed the trip but if I could change anything it would be the weather ...Brrr!
