Beautiful game brings young people together

Young people from six Camden-based youth projects have been working together to put on a local football tournament over the summer holidays.

Young people taking part in Camden Unity Cup launch dayThe Camden Unity Cup, the largest youth football tournament in the borough, kicked off on Saturday 28 July with an official opening ceremony at the Warren football pitch in Whitfield Street.

Over 700 players are expected to take part in the football games. A further 100 young people are involved in organising the match day festivals and undergo training in event management and conflict resolution.

Throughout the summer, divisional play-offs will take place at nine community pitches across Camden.

For each match day, local young people have organised a day of entertainment to run alongside the football extravaganza. As part of the celebrations at the opening ceremony a Chinese Lion accompanied a drumming group, and over a dozen different groups of young people performing on stage.

Boy balancing footballThe Camden Unity Cup is funded by the Department for Government and Local Communities to help tackle territorial tensions by making young people responsible for creating safe and welcoming environments for others to come in to.

All young people involved in hosting the match day festivals received tickets to see Arsenal play Manchester United at the Community Shield tournament at Wembley Stadium.
