Life is not that simple

Are so-called 'Dumb Blondes' from America having a negative influence on the UK ? Aoife O'Connell thinks so!

There appears to be an epidemic of American 'dumb blondes ' these days; High pitched squeals, and ' Oh, My, Gods' all over our televisions! American TV seems to unrealistically revolve around men, money, parties and expensive tastes.

"Queen of Blonde" herself, Miss Paris Hilton, looks to be at the centre of it all. It's almost as though her and her faithful partner, 'Tinkerbell,' (her chiwawa!) are taking over the world!

She rose to fame in the UK during her appearance on hit TV show 'The Simple life,' along side former friend, now foe, Nicole Richie. The duo made a hilarious attempt to live without credit cards and flocks of fans at their feet, whilst even trying to earn a living in the homes of real Americans.

Of course this was hysterical as it lasted, but after a while, I began to feel that the whole façade was somewhat pathetic. Despite their assets, and more than privileged background, I didn't feel jealous of them - in fact, I only felt sympathy!

The same characters lacked character. Their fame had turned them into spoiled, superficial, rich kids, proving unable to last an hour without a costume change or touch-ups to their cosmetics. They were pretty lousy at being 'normal!'

This 'American rich girl' image is also portrayed in shows such as the fictional 'O.C' and the apparently real life 'Laguna Beach ,' both as outrageous as the other.

However I'd hope this image doesn't have a lasting affect in the UK . Young people need role models who are intelligent and strong minded, famous for what they are, not just famous for who they are! The last thing I'd like to see is hundreds of Paris Hilton 'wannabes' walking around my own home town, but I fear it may already be too late!
