In today's society is it wrong to be overweight or not have the perfect figure? Judging by today's reality television programmes, it seems that for the most part producers choose people that look good and have a good figure to star in their shows.
By doing this, young people are left to believe this is the only way to look if they want to get by in today's world or in the entertainment business.
Take Big Brother for example, the majority of the women that were successful in entering the house this year were super skinny or had plastic surgery, with Jayne the obvious exception. It makes girls feel insecure and unattractive, leaving them no other choice but to consider plastic surgery to fit in.
It seems that reality shows have gone beyond entertaining people, but now are used to influencing peoples ways of life. There seems to be an emphasis on choosing people who simply look good to be contestants on the show but to the public's credit, the more interesting contestants like Pete and Glynn are favourites to win.
It isn't just women that are made to feel insecure by reality television shows. Another example is Celebrity Love Island, this show has six muscular men in it with no fat what-so-ever, which leaves guys young and old, thinking they won't be attractive to the female species if they aren't as good looking as the men on television.
Just like Big Brother with four contestants with plastic surgery, Celebrity Love Island also has at least four female contestants with plastic surgery. It suggests to me the only way ratings can be achieved is by having people on the shows that are easy on the eye.
In my opinion, in years to come, more than half of the people living in the western world will have either thought of getting plastic surgery or will have got it. Is this what the world has reduced itself to?
