Review: Tom's Midnight Garden - The Unicorn

Two Children's Express reporters review the first play at a new theatre built especially for young people.

(5 stars out of 6)

The play was great but was made even better by the theatre, which had been designed for children.

The UK's first purpose built professional theatre for children opened it's doors this weekend, and we were among the first children in the world to see their first play, 'Tom's Midnight Garden'. But will this famous classic bring in hundreds more children like us? Lathaniel Dyer, 15, and Jordan Daley, 11, from Children's Express went to find out.

Tom's Midnight Garden is about a boy who discovers he can go back in time to find a secret garden and a new friend when the grandfather clock in his auntie's house strikes 13 times.

The Unicorn TheatreWe loved the story as it captured our imaginations. All the actors played really well but Tom and Hatty were the main characters and were our favourite. The acting was not overdone and not underdone but just right. The actors quickly warmed to us and the other children who laughed at the funny bits.

There were not many props and no garden, so we were forced to use our imaginations. Some children didn't like this but we did because we could see it all in our heads. The lighting and sound were very dramatic. At times it was even a bit scary.

The play was great but was made even better by the theatre, which had been designed for children. There were lowered handrails on the stairs and lowered sinks and blow dryers in the toilets.

The only thing that wasn't child friendly was the food in the café. It had things like spinach and egg sandwiches and brie and something with quail's eggs in.

Overall we had a superb day and would recommend it to all our friends who like the theatre.
