My Life...at the National Portrait Gallery
| I loved every second of it... I was exhausted but exhilarated. |
Over the summer I tripped and fell into an internship at the National Portrait Gallery via the Global Graduates Museums and Galleries scheme for "gifted and talented" young people. By fell I mean it happened by accident - I applied but didn't expect to get in.
The programme aims to get more ethnic minorities into the museum sector, although it wasn't easy to get onto. First, I completed an application form and then I went through a gruelling interview.
For two weeks in August I travelled to Leicester Square everyday, working with curators, conservationists, exhibitionists, publishers and marketers. I worked in lots of different departments and did various things, including a presentation on how to make the National Portrait Gallery better for young people.
I loved every second of it; every morning on the tube I looked through my notes, every afternoon I stayed late, and every night I was exhausted but exhilarated. It has been a fabulous experience, which I hope to build on. Who knows where I'll be in ten years time?
