Newcastle teens take on the city's drug and alcohol problems
If we're going to tackle drug and alcohol misuse we need to get the message across to young people in a way that they will listen to. The best way to do this is to get young people to tell us how.
| 'Looking hard' was considered a reason many young people try drugs. |
With this in mind, our Play and Youth Service has joined forces with the Drug Action Team - a partnership of statutory and voluntary agencies - to organise a series of special drug and alcohol awareness sessions for young people.
So far the young people have come up with novel ideas including writing and recording their own song.
They're also getting the chance to take part in fun activities like drama, music and DJ-ing workshops and making non-alcoholic cocktails.
Young reporters Shona Lee (14), Gavin Mather (15) and Emma Cosford (17) of Children's Express North East - a programme of learning through journalism for 8-18s run in partnership with Newcastle Literacy Trust - have been on hand to help record the views of those involved about drugs and the events.
'Looking hard' was considered a reason many young people try drugs. "First they are dared to but then they become addicted," said Adam Healy (12).
Young people were also concerned about the impact drug-taking has on the people around drug-users. "Drugs affect the families of drug takers. If you get caught with drugs you can get put in prison" said Chris Parr (10).
