With the Mercury Music prize out of the way Children's Express reporters find out what young people really listen to.

I’m into Hip-hop and dance, but Eminem annoys me and I don’t like S Club and Westlife.

Hayley Todd, 10, Cowgate

The last CD I bought was in March and it was Atomic Kitten. It's basically a bunch of girls who get together and put all their effort into doing this single and they have about three albums out. I would really have to think hard about the type of music I don't like because I like it all. I have about twenty-five CD's and I listen to all of them because what is the point in buying them if you don't listen to them? I wish my favourite popstar had a new single out because it would be good to listen to some new songs. Music is just my thing and I listen to loads of it.

Sometimes I listen to the same music as my mam and dad because my mam has this lovely album called 'Que Sera Sera' and I love it (sings Que Sera Sera). Basically my dad listens to old-fashioned music because he is old fashioned. I want Gareth Gates' new single because I think that he's cool and all my friends at school have it and they say it's mint. He has spiky hair and he's gorgeous.

Laurence Linsley, 13, York

The first CD I bought was Robbie Williams' 'I've been expecting you'. I'm also into Hip-hop and dance but I just like loads of stuff. I don't like Eminem though because he annoys me and I don't like S Club and Westlife, people like that. I don't listen to music that much because I do other stuff. I certainly don't listen to the same music as my mam and dad. I want to get the new Toploader [CD] this weekend because I really like them. I kind of feel happy when I listen to a new song. Anything I like makes me feel happy inside.

Liam Caine, 10, Cowgate

In the school holidays I bought the Eminem CD. I always listen to him. I like really fast music the most, like when it starts fast and doesn't stop until the end. I have about seven CDs. My mam listens to the same music as me and my dad listens to slow music. There are loads of songs that I want that are out at the minute. I really like Eminems new one, Its called Cleaning out my closet. It always makes me feel happy.

Christy Newby, 11, Cowgate

I didn't buy any CDs during the school holidays but I really like pop music. I can't really describe it because pop is just pop. I don't exactly know how many CDs I have, all I can tell you is that I have a draw-full. It's my Sugarbabes CD that I always listen to.

I never listen to the same music as my parents. My mam likes rave music and my dad likes country music. I don't think there are any new CD's out at the moment that I would really like. There are lots of songs that just make me feel like dancing. I think its rave music that makes me happy but love songs make me feel really sad.

Christopher March, 11, Cowgate

The only CD I bought during the school holidays was Tekken 3 for PC but the music I like the most is by Eminem. I always listen to his music. My mam listens to love songs and my dad listens to Elvis Presley. It's the new Eminem single that I want but I do really like the one that goes 'Will the real Slim Shady please stand up, please stand up'. It makes me feel really wicked.
