Alien Angle - the exhibition

Photo-journalists from Children's Express unveil their perspective on the teen skateboarding culture in Belfast for a special city exhibition.

August 14-31 2002

'Alien Angle', so called by the team because of the exhibition's unique youth perspective, documents the lives of young skateboarders in the city. The photographs investigate every aspect of the popular sport including street skating, skate parks and the all-important dress code.

The exhibition combines normal photography techniques and digitally enhanced photos with excellent results. The team underwent a three-month series of workshops with Sean McKernan, one of Belfast's best community freelance photographers and Chris Martin, a digital design professional who specialises in skateboarding.

Amy Magowan Greene, 14, started off concentrating on portrait photography, but ended up a skateboard enthusiast. "Skateboarders are part of our culture and we can't ignore them," she said.

"When I started the project I though it would be just about skateboarders - the four boys I worked with are all enthusiasts - but it has more depth than that. There's more to skateboarding than just style. I am really proud of what we have achieved."
