Les Ballets Trockaderos Monte Carlo

Two young reviewers find plenty to enjoy in the performance of this all-male dance troupe.

Children's Express journalists review what's on offer at the 2001 Belfast Festival at Queens.

It was really funny to see Irish dancing done by men in tutus.

Premiered at the Waterfront (November 7), Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo provided ballet-goers with a special and rather unique treat.

"It was my first ballet and I thought it was hilarious, although I did not understand everything all of the time," said Christina Doran, 11.

Known affectionately as the Trocks, the all male troupe performed extracts from Swan Lake and other ballets. Possibly those up on ballet would have really got the most of this fantastic performance but the programme was entertaining and funny enough for the non-ballet element.

"My favourite part of the ballet was when all the dancers did Riverdance at the end of the evening because it was really funny to see Irish dancing done by men in tutus who were meant to be doing ballet," said Christina.

"The Dying Swan routine was funny because the more the dancer twirled around the more feathers came off. He was trying to pick them up and stick them back on," said Jenny Quinn, 13.

Our young reviewers admitted they were a little bored at times but thought it was a great experience to see ballet performed by men in drag. For young people who do not have much experience with ballet it could be a little boring. We recommend that there are a few shorter shows for young people.
