Junior Jury: school dinners

Mass catering in Newcastle upon Tyne get a resounding thumbs up from this week's jurists.

When kids return to school next week, parents will be reassured to know that school dinners get the thumbs-up from their children.

They’re brilliant, except when it’s Christmas and they give you Brussel sprouts.

Lavinia McGowan, 7, Blakelaw

My favourite school dinner is Yorkshire pudding. My worst food is beans because they make you pump. School meals are alright but they could be a bit hotter. They're a lot nicer than they used to be because now you can get crisps and all that, and you can get pop - but I would prefer McDonalds.

Alan Knox, 12, Montagu Estate

I'd rather have a packed lunch. School meals could be improved by not putting peas on my dinner. I don't like them. My favourite dinner would be chicken and gravy.

Leanne Jones, 8, Walbottle

I've been eating schools meals for about two years and I quite like them. I'd rather have a school dinner than a packed lunch because they're nice but I think you could have a bit more on your plate.

I'd rather have home meals because you get more on your plate. My favourite school meal has probably been chicken nuggets, carrots and coke. My worst was probably beetroot.

James Davison, 7, Walbottle

School dinners are nice but they could give you more. My favourite meal is spare ribs.

Simon Grant, 7, Walbottle

I think they are quite nice but I don't like the vegetable curries. If I could have anything for my dinner it would be chicken or sausages. I'd like it if they did beef because it tastes nice.

Lisa English, 12, Blakelaw

They're nice and tasty but I would like to see more choice of sandwiches. They started to do more seafood sandwiches last year.

David Robinson, 8, Walbottle

They're brilliant. They taste nice. The meal I don't like is when it's Christmas and they give you Brussel sprouts. My favourite food is cheese.

Sonia McAthey, 13, Cowgate

I think they are excellent. You get enough to eat and they fill you up. There's a lot of choice. You could have hot dogs in a bun or you could have chips and carrots. You can get different kinds of drinks. You can get salad bowls. The best meal would be cheese quiche, chips and chocolate eclairs. I like cheeseburgers, too.

Becky Archer, 8, Walbottle

School dinners are lovely. They are tasty. They are better than my mum's dinners. My favourite food is strawberries.
