Children's Express reviewers report on the CS Lewis tale "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe", as staged at Sadler's Wells in London.
| The scenery was excellent – so much so that we almost wanted to put our scarves and hats back on! |
The story follows the adventures of four children, Lucy, Susan, Peter and Edmund, who are evacuated to their aunt's house in the countryside. The fun begins when Lucy, the youngest, climbs into a wardrobe during a game of hide and seek.
However, this is no ordinary wardrobe. Through it's back lies the mysterious world of Narnia, where it's always winter, but never Christmas. Lucy eventually persuades her brothers and sister to accompany her through the wardrobe. And boy, do they have their work cut out for them when they get there. They have to help the great Lion, Aslan, to defeat the evil white witch, who has reigned over Narnia for longer than anyone can remember.
Along their magical journey they make many friends and foes.
We thought this play was fantastic. The scenery was excellent and made us feel as though we really had been transported to the icy, cold world of Narnia - so much so that we almost wanted to put our scarves and hats back on!
The actors were all marvellous. The white witch and her cronies had us on the edge of our seats with fear, while the jolly Mr and Mrs Beaver had us in fits of giggles.
We were totally hooked by this production. The fantastic costumes, amazing sets and superb actors added up to a really enchanting experience. We could really feel the magic in the air in the theatre.
We reckon that The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is great for all the family and we give it a festive full marks.
