Book Review: The Life of Stephen Lawrence

Della Hicks-Wilson reviews Verna Wilkins' book on the life and murder of Stephen Lawrence.

Taramind Press, 10.99.

Verna Wilkins takes us back to a time when Stephen Lawrence was taking his first footsteps and prancing around joyfully at play center. Never before have we had the opportunity to delve into Stephen's life, which was tragically cut short in 1993.

Eight years later, a long-awaited biography has been published. Accompanied by illustrations and warming testimonials from relatives, friends and teachers, we learn how Stephen loved sports, and developed a flourishing passion for drawing and maths.

Though the book is aimed at 9-12 year olds, and only consists of 12 short chapters, the deft use language makes you believe that you are his friend. And at the end, it makes you feel a sense of pain and loss because the friendship is so cruelly cut short.
