Answer Back: Children on grandparents

What role do grandparents play in modern family life? They are friends and confidantes far more than fussy old dears, say reporters from Children's Express.

Paras Patel, 12, Birmingham

My grandparents live with me and they are very nice. My granddad gets me things I want whenever I ask, unless he thinks they are worthless and I don't need them. The bad thing about my grandparents is that they worry too much.

I cannot tell my parents the same things that I can tell my grandparents.

Mark Lewis, 15, Sheffield

I lost my granddad a few weeks ago and our family was devastated. My nan believes in me and wants me to do well. If I needed anything then she would do her best to help. I have had the best grandparents in the world.

Sara Bates, 11, Birmingham

My grandparents are old now, but they act like they are my age and I find it easy to talk to them.

Michael Roberts, 15, Plymouth

Grandparents play an important role in the family, but do not need to be responsible for looking after their grandchildren. Mothers do that. When children have not visited them for a long time the best thing about seeing them is having fun. My grandparents are there whenever I need love, care and attention.

Michael Leathem, 14, Belfast

My mum and dad split up and my grandfather was great. He let me stay with him until my mum and dad sorted it out. So I think that grandparents are very important because they are there for you when you need them. They also have a lot of experience and knowledge, which can be very useful.

Kimberley Bennett, 13, Sheffield

Grandparents take you shopping, give you money and at weekends you get to stay over. But most of all they love you.

Danielle Ferrin, 16, Belfast

What I like the best about my grandparents is the advice that they give, which is always good. I suppose that is a result of experience. What I do not like is when they sometimes get sick and I feel powerless to help.

Amy Ward, 14, Sheffield

My grandparents play a really big part in my life and I feel I can tell them all my problems. Conversations with my parents differ from those with my grandparents. I cannot tell my parents the same things that I can tell my grandparents. At the moment my grandmother is ill in hospital and I feel lost without her.
