Headliners has received a grant of £9,977 towards the costs of its volunteering through journalism project for young people in Islington and Hackney. The grant has been made by the Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales through its Community Programme.
Based in Islington, Headliners works with young people aged eight to 19 providing learning through journalism. The funding will focus on work with young people in Islington and Hackney empowering them to tell their own stories on issues that affect them through print and broadcast journalism.
Headliners is available to children and teenagers each day after school, Saturdays and during the school holidays. Everyone gets to learn new skills including operating cameras; asking questions that will generate a headline through to preparing a piece for print or broadcast. The results have been published widely in national and regional outlets including The Guardian, BBC London and London Tonight.
Fiona Wyton, director, commented, "The funding will make a great difference to engaging more young people to express themselves through a medium that they have grown up with. Currently we have over 80 taking part in Islington and Hackney and we hope to bring more on board soon."
13-year-old Jordan Daley from Islington, a Headliners member since he was nine, said: "Thank you for supporting Headliners so they can continue to do the great things they are doing. We love being involved in Headliners and money like this helps us do more stories and work in the area."
